The Leibniz Association is a consortium of 86 federal and state government-funded research and service facilities. The German Primate Centre (DPZ) is a member of the Leibniz Association and conducts scientific and biomedical research on and with primates.
PhD position in behavioural endocrinology
We are seeking a PhD-student for a project on the effect of male migration on the behaviour and physiological stress response of group members in crested macaques (Macaca nigra). The study will be conducted as part of the Macaca Nigra Project (www.macaca-nigra.org) in the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Indonesia and will be carried out in close collaboration with our Indonesian counterparts. Candidates will enrol in the graduate programme of the University of Göttingen. Field work will comprise collection of behavioural data, plus faecal and saliva samples for hormone analysis. Laboratory hormone and data analysis will be carried out in Goettingen.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Animal Behavior, Physical Anthropology, Primatology, or a related field and be familiar with topics of Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology focussing on primates. Previous field work experience in the tropics will be required. Ability to work in a team is essential.

The language in our team will be English, but willingness to learn Bahasa Indonesia will be required.
Funding for a PhD position including travel research expenses is available for 3 years, from April 1st 2011. The student will spend at least 12 months in the field.
