PhD student position

Under proviso of final approval of funding, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), thesis-based, graduate student project is available at the University of Goettingen, Germany, Department of Animal Science, in collaboration with the University of Kassel, Germany, Section of Animal Breeding. 

The PhD student position - salary based on E 13 TV-L - is funded for the duration of 2 years and aims to investigate the effect of an automatic brush on claw and hoof health, behaviour and economy of dairy cows and riding horses. The position is to be filled starting August 1st 2011 with 50 percent of the regular working hours (19,9 hours/week).

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an MSc degree in animal science, veterinary medicine, physiology, or related biological sciences, preferably with a focus on quantitative genetics and/or animal behaviour. The successful candidate should have demonstrated strong academic performance, strong verbal and written communication skills and should have ex-perience with the dairy cattle and equine industry. A primary responsibility will be to monitor dairy cows’claw health and horses’ hoof health and behaviour in selected farms with and without use of the automatic brush, and the subsequent analysis of economical and ecological impacts. Therefore, experience with handling cattle and horses, and in particular with the identification of claw diseases is strongly recommended. Although it would be considered an asset, proficiency in German language is not an essential requirement.
