Position Description:
Self-funding volunteer required to assist with various projects on wild bonobos at the Lomako Scientific Research Center, Lomako- Yokokala Faunal Reserve, (RFLY) Democratic Republic of Congo. The assistant will work alongside an existing team of Congolese personnel. Field work includes long-distance walking through very difficult terrain in all weather conditions with basic living conditions and food.
Qualifications/Experience:
Qualifications: Essential requirements are (1) field experience, (2) above average physical fitness, (3) above average resistance to social/psychological stress, (4) the ability to live and work with a team of local staff. Practical and technical skills required for orientation and communication in the forest, such as GPS and compass reading, and a basic knowledge of French would be helpful. Candidates should have: strong social skills, a high degree of self-motivation and responsibility, and show respect to local customs. Candidates with experience in (a) field research in francophone Africa and (b) behavioral research on wild animals will be preferred.
Salary/funding:
Salary/funding: the candidate will need to cover: visa and vaccination costs, international flights to and from Congo, stay in Kinshasa prior to departure for the field and feeding costs while in the field.
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Provided by the Project: field equipment such as GPS, compass, head torch. Transport from Basankusu to the field site.
Term of Appointment:
3, 6 or 9 months starting at mutual convenience.
