Field Assistant --Bonobo Communication, DR Congo

Position Description:
We are looking for a field assistant to help with research on communication in wild bonobos at the LuiKotale field site in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The field assistant will split his/her time between two projects. One project, run by Paul Kuchenbuch (Max-Planck Institute for Ornithology), will focus on the development of gestural communication. The other project, run by Isaac Schamberg (University of Pennsylvania), will investigate the bonobos' vocalizations. The research will include behavioral observation and video and audio recording. The job requires working long days (up to 12 hours) and walking long distances (up to 30km).

Qualifications/Experience:
The position requires above average physical fitness, a high degree of discipline, self-motivation and responsibility, high stress resistance. Assistant cannot be a picky eater, as the diet consists  mainly of local food. Candidates with experience in field research in Africa and/or behavioral data collection will be preferred. Must speak fluent English. Ability to communicate in French is a preferred.

Salary/funding:

Accommodation and living expenses at the camp (lodging in tents, food) as well as at the flight from Kinshasa to the camp and back will be covered by the project. A monthly stipend (~$100/month) and  reimbursement of the international flight up to $1000 will be available after completion of the field work.

Term of Appointment:
July 2012 - End of December 2012 (6 months)
