Position Description:

The individual will work in the Behavioral Services department of the Southwest National Primate Research Center located at Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, TX. Duties for this position include preparing, assessing, and distributing enrichment to nonhuman primates. Additionally, this position involves the creation of enrichment schedules, the maintenance of computerized records, monitoring of behavior, developing and making enrichment devices, and meeting participation. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Behavioral Services.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS: This work may involve potential exposure to bulk cleaning products (Enviro-B, Superblue) and infectious materials (BSL-2). Work will be performed outdoors in the heat, cold, or elements. May need to use power tools such as a drill or saw. Will work closely with nonhuman primates. Job will require computer work. May drive a motor vehicle on Texas Biomed business. Must have valid driver’s license and meet Texas Biomed driving standards. Must be able to climb ladders and lift 50 pounds and carry for short distances without assistance. Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program is required. Immunization for hepatitis B is required unless waived by the employee. Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.

OTHER: This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.

Qualifications/Experience:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Required: Bachelor’s degree in animal science, anthropology, psychology, zoology, or related field. At least one year experience working with animals on a professional level. Good organizational skills, good time management skills, good oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently. Preferred: Coursework in primatology. Work experience with nonhuman primates. Experience with designing/building enrichment devices, and experience with power tools. Public speaking experience preferred.
