Description:
The Director of Animal Welfare facilitates
and leads the programs and initiatives of the Center for Zoo Animal Welfare,
which is dedicated to bringing attention and resources to the science of zoo
animal welfare and to applying what is learned to the development of animal
welfare best practices and animal welfare policy. The Director of Animal Welfare develops,
conducts, facilitates and oversees applied research aimed at assessing and
improving the welfare of zoo animals and contributing to knowledge about
captive exotic animal welfare; consults and cooperates with curators and
veterinarians in animal husbandry and health care management; oversees programs
for environmental enrichment and operant conditioning training; and contributes
to the development of zoo animal welfare philosophy and policy.
Qualifications:
·
Advanced degree in zoology, animal behavior,
or a closely related discipline.
·
Experience conducting behavioral research
with captive wildlife.
·
Demonstrated background in animal welfare
research.
·
Knowledge of environmental enrichment and
operant conditioning training.
Duties:
·
Design, coordinate, conduct and oversee
applied research aimed at assessing and improving the welfare of zoo animals
and furthering knowledge about captive exotic animal welfare.
·
Oversee development and maintenance of Center
for Zoo Animal Welfare Resource Center.
·
Contribute to the development of animal
welfare forums, workshops, and lecture series.
·
Consult and cooperate with Curators of the
animal division and veterinarians in animal husbandry and health care
management.
·
Oversee implementation of enrichment and
training programs, including activities and job performance of Curator of
Animal Welfare.
·
Contribute to the development of zoo animal
welfare philosophy and policy.
·
Contribute to the development of Detroit
Zoological Society Conservation and Animal Welfare Master Plans.
·
Share results of research through publication
of scientific and popular articles.
·
Develop and conduct presentations at
professional meetings.
·
Create and conduct educational presentations
in both formal and informal settings.
·
Contribute to strategic and other
organizational planning processes.
·
Prepare, submit, and monitor budgets as
required.
·
Plan, coordinate, oversee and manage
performance of Curator of Animal Welfare, research analyst/technician(s),
interns and students.
·
Perform other duties as required.
