Postdoc & PhD positions now open in Geneva in the field of comparative insect genomics.

We are looking for highly motivated and innovative candidates to lead sequencing and computational exploration of several basal insect genomes, focusing on evolutionary tracing of genomic elements behind large-effect phenotypes such as the emergence of wings or metamorphosis. In addition to the 3-year Swiss National Funds grant, this project will directly benefit and contribute to the i5K initiative (to sequence genomes of 5’000 insects) and the 1KITE project (sequencing 1’000 insect transcriptomes). Insects are the most diverse and successful terrestrial animals, encompassing by far the largest number of species. Thus, insect genomes provide an exceptional opportunity to explore the evolutionary processes acting on genes and genomes.

The ideal candidates should have a strong background in bioinformatics, including programming skills, and a good understanding of molecular biology and evolution. A Diploma or MSc degree in Bioinformatics or Biology, practical experience in the Unix environment, and fluency in English are required for both positions.
The postdoctoral candidate will have a PhD with experience in the computational evolutionary analysis of genome sequencing data and knowledge of arthropod biology.

The project will be supervised by Prof. Evgeny Zdobnov, heading the Computational Evolutionary Genomics group at the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development of the University of Geneva Medical School. We are also part of the renowned Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, and offer a stimulating research environment with excellent facilities.

The international city of Geneva, described as ‘the smallest of the large capitals’, offers a vibrant city life within easy reach of the picturesque lake and stunning Alps.

Closing date for applications: 1 Dec 2012.
