The Department of Animal Science, Aarhus University, invites
applications for a permanent position as senior researcher or associate
professor in poultry behaviour and welfare. The position is available
from April 1, 2017.
The department of Animal Science and the research unit of animal behaviour and stress biology
The department has strong research units within immunology and microbiology, molecular nutrition and reproduction, animal nutrition and physiology, animal behaviour and stress biology, and epidemiology and management. The successful applicant will be working in the Section of animal behaviour and stress biology that produces and disseminates new knowledge of the behavioural needs, stress biology and adaptability of domesticated animals in order to develop principles for housing, and management ensuring animal welfare, health and functionality when used for production, research and as hobby and therapy animals. The research group contributes to the development of new methods for assessment of welfare and adaptability, which can be used in animal breeding, decision support systems as well as in disease surveillance and documentation of animal welfare.
Working area
The work will include research in behaviour of poultry, including layers, broilers and breeder parents for welfare assessment as a basis for improving management, housing and production systems. The research can involve e.g. the effects of early experiences on the development of behaviour and other factors affecting abnormal and injurious behaviour. Furthermore, the research can cover e.g. effects of environmental enrichment on the reduction of welfare problems and the use of new technology to secure and improve welfare and production. Besides creating a strong research basis the candidate has to perform both teaching and research-based consultancy for the public sector. Finally, the candidate will be a contact person for the poultry sector regarding animal welfare issues.
Qualifications
Qualifications for the senior researcher or associate professor level at Aarhus University include a strong academic background, documented successful grant writing and experience with project management, industrial/public sector collaboration, as well as teaching and supervision experience. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated.
