Field Assistant/Research volunteer at the Inkawu Vervet Project, South Africa

Position Description:
I am looking for a highly motivated volunteer field research assistant to help me with my postdoctoral project on social transmission in wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) in Kwazulu-Natal, South-Africa. The work will take place within the Inkawu Vervet Project led by Prof. Erica van de Waal (University of Lausanne, Switzerland).
The field assistant’s main duties will be to collect behavioural data on habituated groups of wild vervet monkeys (focal animal sampling), participate and help in field experiments and eventually in video analyses.
The assistant would also help in others general team duties (e.g. collect faecal samples; teach new volunteers to recognize the monkeys).
The assistant is expected to spend about 8 months in the field in order to qualify for financial compensation of their travel costs (up to 1400.- CHF) on-site lodging in South Africa. The applicant will be responsible for her/his own field equipment (hiking shoes, bush clothes, rain gear, etc.), as well as travel to South Africa, food costs (300 ZAR per week), vaccinations and travel insurance. Research equipment (handheld computers, binoculars and VHF-receivers for telemetry) are provided.
Qualifications:
Successful applicant has completed at least undergraduate university degree in zoology, biology or animal behaviour; is proficient in English, has excellent social skills, and is able to work within a large, interdisciplinary research team under field conditions (8h a day, 6 days a week).
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
Financial compensation of on-site lodging and travel are available after having completed the work (see above).
Term of Appointment: From beginning of March to end of October 2018 (at least 8 months).
