PhD Opportunities @ Kent

We are seeking applications from bright, motivated students for a number of Vice Chancellor’s PhD Scholarships currently offered by the School of Anthropology and Conservation, for an Autumn 2018 start.

In particular we are interested in hearing from those interested in pursuing PhD research into aspects of behaviour and ecology of human and non-human primates. In the first instance, we ask for an informal approach (including a CV, and project ideas) to one of the following potential supervisors:

Dr Nicholas E Newton-Fisher: Primate socioecology; social behaviour of great apes (esp. chimpanzees); aggression and social dominance; cooperation, relationships and biological markets.
email: N.E.Newton-Fisher@kent.ac.uk

Dr Brandon Wheeler: Primate socioecology, communication, anti-predator behaviour, behaviour of primate predators, feeding competition, capuchins, non-linguistic vocal communication in humans. email: B.C.Wheeler@kent.ac.uk

Dr Tatyana Humle: Primate-human interactions (natural and social science approaches), great ape conservation (esp. chimpanzees outside protected areas); balancing development & conservation; primate rehabilitation & translocation.
email: T.Humle@kent.ac.uk

Dr Sarah E Johns: Human behavioural ecology, female-female conflict and competition, human sexual and reproductive behaviours, pregnancy, postnatal depression, evolutionary public heath.
email: S.E.Johns@kent.ac.uk

The University of Kent requires all PhD students to be supervised by a team, and one-or-other of us may end up as a second supervisor even if you apply to work primarily with one of the others. We are also open to explicitly joint-supervised projects where suitable for the research question.
You will be asked to draft a 2-page proposal (submission of this is required as part of the application process), for which we will provide guidance.
